Book Review : Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman

“A person who cannot imagine the future is a person who cannot contemplate the result of his action. Some are thus paralyzed into inaction.”

“In a world without future, each moment is the end.”

My Rating : *4.5 Stars*

This was a brilliant book and without doubt I want to recommend this book to every one. This was a very delightful read and took only three hours to read it. It was fun, fast and a thought provoking read.

Time is the soul of this book and basically this book is a collection of Einstein’s dreams(fictional dreams) which he saw when he was working on the Theory of Relativity(or say when he was struggling with the idea of relativity).

I liked the way these dreams were presented and I liked the poetry, the words were really flowing.

I don’t call this a novel and actually this book is a collection of about 30 vignettes and these vignettes are entirely based on different realities of time.

Now I have few questions for you :

How do you see time? And what do you see, when you picture time?

What if, you stuck in time?

What if, time is a circle?

What if, time has three dimension, like space?

“In this world, time has three dimension, like space. Just as an object may move in three perpendicular directions, corresponding to horizontal, vertical and longitudinal, so an object may participate in three perpendicular futures. Each future moves in different direction of time. Each future is real. At every point of decision, the world split into three worlds, each with the same people, but different fates for those people. In time, there are an infinity of worlds.”

If you know the answers of these questions then good, but if not then go read this book and face the different realities of time and answer these questions for yourself 😉

You’ll be amazed!

Happy Reading!

Book Review : I Heart Series by Lindsey Kelk

“Life is too short to be miserable.”

My Rating : *4 Stars*

I followed these hearties for 3 years, I mean I read the first book when I was 15 year old and the last time I read one of these I was 17(I heart Vegas, the last installment that I read).

Okay so a secret, I call these books my guilty pleasure, when ever in my teenage years I needed a enjoyable escapist reading these books helped me. And this series did start with a bang!(I mean it!).

You know what I liked about these book that they kept me hooked up with the story, I had this soft spot for Angela and why I continued reading them because maybe I wanted completeness and the 4th installment provided me with that, so that was my last read because I was satisfied and also I think by that time I was over this genre(that people call Chick Lit, and I totally hate this word, totally!),I just can’t read them now.

Now let me talk about these book, well I call them cute because they are! after you read them you feel all cozy and fuzzy inside.

I want to say Lindsey Kelk, I love you for these hearties at least at some point of time I loved them.

These books are full of emotions, crazy stuff, people who make mistakes(they felt real to me), expensive stuff(which I can’t buy), hotness, some of my dream destinations(Well to tell you the truth I’m not into Chick-Lit but New York, Hollywood, Paris and Vegas made me want to read these books :P), and liters of alcohol(I don’t drink).

I really love Paris to actually have this on my wall.(no I’ve never been there)

Alex, Angela’s boyfriend, for me was adorable and friendship between Jenny and Angela was remarkable.

Also these books are well written, I really liked the writing style and the stories are not at all predictable(well I Heart Vegas was kinda predictable). And I loved those cute book covers.

These books are relatable as they made me think about all the amazing friends I have in my life(they are few, but all of them are amazing and fabulous).

So these books are lighthearted, uplifting(don’t take it seriously) and I loved them all till I heart Vegas and  I’m not gonna read I heart London (if Angela can’t stand her parents for 10 minutes, how am I suppose to stand them for an entire novel) and I heart Christmas.(I think I’m just getting old :/)

Happy Reading!

Book Review : The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh

“This is my gift to you, this story that is also a song…”

My Rating : *4 Stars*

Amitav Ghosh, I must say is an amazing story teller and in this book he proved beyond doubt that literary skill of the Bengali is redoubtable!

Absolutely engrossing, this book is one such where you come across a great story which is amazingly written and make you an instant fan of the author.

This book is well researched and the story is set in the 70’s, and it revolves around the Sundarbans and have this lovely descriptions of the land, the people and the animals(I would actually call it informative!)

Why 4 stars to this book, even though it is such an amazing book? Yes, because at times the writer seems to me a bit too cynical and calculative.

And I’m bit ashamed of myself that I read just one book by this finest Indian writer. However, I’m planning to read his other books soon! and I grant his books a permanent position in my reading list(until they disappoint me).

Book Review : The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

“But man is not made for defeat,” he said. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”

 My Rating : *4 Stars*

You see our mind works in weird ways, ya. Like to our mind higher price tag defines the higher quality of the product(don’t say No! you know it does), likewise if I talk about this book, Ernest Hemingway won the Pulitzer Prize for “The Old Man and the Sea”, Good!

Now you might be thinking why was I talking about mind, so the thing is when you get to know people are getting prize for certain books, then there must be some complex and deep thoughts associated with that book. However, this book is literally very simplistic(talk about simplicity!) and literally it is just about an old man, sea, fish and a boat. That is it. And really if you try to make this complex (like I was trying to make, this book gonna suck!).

As Hemingway said : “There isn’t any symbolism, the sea is a sea, the old man is an old man, the boy is a boy and the fish is a fish. The sharks are all sharks no better and no worse. All the symbolism that people say is shit. What goes beyond is what you see beyond when you know.”

This book basically made me feel sad for the old man, for he was not sad for himself. The ending was not all happy. Sometimes you just go too far, you give up and that is when you get destroyed and once you are destroyed you are defeated.

It is a story of struggle, ambition and survival.

“It’s silly not to hope. It’s a sin he thought.”

And to tell you the truth when I gave this book the very first read, it bored me to death!

For people who think watching is way better then reading, here is a treat for you as well, watch it! it’s perfection!

Book Review : The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

“You give but little when you give of your possessions.

It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”

My Rating : *4 Stars*

The talks of the prophet and things that affect our everyday life are very touching and deeply philosophical. The writing is simply awesome. ‘The Prophet’ is one of those very few books that have pearls of wisdom on every page.

The chapter I liked the most is “On Children”

picture (2)

Your Children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls.

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

As I said I liked this chapter. However, when I read this to my mother.

she said:

Well I guess then you should just get out of my house as well! (with a smirk ;))

The other thing is even though this book is written very beautifully and contain a lot of wisdom, it just contradict itself and sometimes I couldn’t agree with the writer(I guess because of different perspectives).

But yes I enjoyed it for the lyrical prose and for this man talking of all the elements of life.

“Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.

But you are eternity and you are the mirror.”

” Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and other say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed. “

Book Review : Thoughtless ( Thoughtless #1) by S.C. Stephens

“You wreck me.”

My Rating : *2.5 Stars*

For almost two years now, Kiera’s boyfriend, Denny, has been everything she’s ever wanted: loving, tender and endlessly devoted to her. When they head off to a new city to start their lives together, Denny at his dream job and Kiera at a top-notch university, everything seems perfect. Then an unforeseen obligation forces the happy couple apart.

Feeling lonely, confused, and in need of comfort, Kiera turns to an unexpected source—a local rock star named Kellan Kyle. At first, he’s purely a friend that she can lean on, but as her loneliness grows, so does their relationship. And then one night everything changes… and none of them will ever be the same.

Review :

I don’t even know what I want to say, I really don’t. Okay let me start my ranting!

Plot :

If I tell you what is the second most shittiest thing about this book, I would say The Plot.

Okay sometimes you come across a book, you start reading it and after a while you get to know that it actually is a part of a series, meh… So yes I first read the second book, that is Effortless.(turned out it was not this shitty, and I wanted know what exactly happened before…so that led me to the first book, that is Thoughtless.)

So now I’m here reading Thoughtless, I’m very curious to know what actually happened in the first book.

Turned out LOVE TRIANGLE happened :/ ( Why? oh, why?)

Now that is also not the worst thing that happened in the book…the protagonist  turned out to be a total idiot, like if I meet her in real life, I would just smack her face hard on the wall(let us talk about her later).

But still I read the whole book(whole book I’m talking about, let me tell you I read the whole series :P) because the author hold my attention with all the drama and emotion, but dear lord! this book was a roller coaster ride, indeed it was.

Characters :

There are three main characters, Kellan, Kiera and Danny. Kiera, the protagonist, is actually in relationship with Denny. Kellan is Denny’s best friend.

Kellan Kyle

I really want to ask S.C. Stephens, that what were you trying to do while you wrote this character. What do you want? Do you want us to die in shame? or maybe you want us to have an expectation that a guy like this exist? BTW who were you thinking about while writing this character, I want to know madam.

I fell in love with this guy instantly, I was like wow…but I’m really angry with him as well. And also I feel sorry for him. He is not perfect, but he’s perfect. He’s lead singer of a band called ” D-Bags”(Really, I hate the name).

pick for Denny

He is the best character in the whole book, although the storyline broke my heart at times for Denny 😦

Well she is the worst person in the book.

Kiera is a self centered, stubborn, clueless, immature and a selfish woman.

She was constantly cheating and cheating and cheating on her boyfriend through out the book…and was constantly feeling guilty for what she was doing.

It was like I’m cheating and I’m guilty, but again I’m cheating and I’m guilty…But I’ll still cheat( Who the fuck does that?) I literally started hating the word guilty after reading this book.

And then for some reason she thought that she is innocent :/

Kellan: We were never innocent, Kiera. How naive are you?

I hated her, and now I’m tired of thinking about her. And most of the people in this book were stupid, total stupid!

And then there are other characters, band members, their girlfriends( they are just normal), then there are these weird people who work at Petes (it is a bar where D-Bags play their music)

So well now I want to forcefully end this review, like the author did with the book. Nothing much to say, but I still want to say something that don’t read this book.(If you are not already in the trap ;))

And if people call this romance, I hate romance!

Review to second book Effortless(Thoughtless #2)

Book Review : Song Bird by Christine M. Knight

This book is a sequel of Life Song. You can also check out the review of the first book Life Song by Christine M. Knight.

“I’m not Mavis anymore.”

For years, song bird Nikki Mills (aka Mavis Mills) dreamed of the freedom and lifestyle that came with being a platinum record artist. To get there, she put her career and son first and her love life on hold.

Now an international singing sensation, Nikki discovers her reality is very different from what she had imagined. Determined not to be caged by the fan and media circus, Nikki struggles to protect her son, their relationship and lifestyle. That struggle is complicated by her desire for a love life.

The unearthing of Nikki’s dark past, known only to her inner circle, creates a paparazzi whirlwind that threatens to destroy her. Can she find the courage to withstand the media storm? Can she transcend her past? How will she resolve matters of the heart?

Set between 2000 and 2002, the themes in Song Bird centre on discovery, belonging, transformation, dealing with adversity, and matters of the heart.

You know when you read this book, you actually start caring about the characters. Like for some reason(I’m not telling what reason it is because it’s a spoiler :P) I really care about Marvis. The characters have this potential to emerge out as real people, the story is uplifting. And it is good to follow Marvis journey to find freedom and fame.

“Song Bird” is beautifully written and is an engrossing and enjoyable read. And when I read this book it somehow made me feel good about life, Life Song did it too.

What more this book taught, that while your past shape you up, but it doesn’t actually define who you are, and that it is your present that actually defines you!(You come across a situation and then you show the world who you really are)

In the end, I would say, this book is a good read.

Then why 4 stars? because Life Song for me was 5 Stars 😉

Book Review : Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover

“However, I’ve learned that the heart can’t be told when and how it should love. The heart does whatever the hell it wants to do. The only thing we can control is whether we give our lives and our minds the chance to catch up to our hearts.”

My Rating : *5 Stars*

Okay now you may say that I live under a rock or something because until last December I didn’t even know about this author who was actually ruling the romance world. I know, I know, I live under a rock.

So coming back to the point where I’m gonna talk about this book. And the point is this book is FREAKING PERFECT!

Like totally and absolutely perfect and I just looove this book,I do. When I read this book, I was like “Oh, my. So many feelings all at once.” and let me tell you this book is the best romance book I read in 2014 and for a winter night this book turned out to be awesome.

This book was perfect as I said, but it was not all rainbows, unicorns and lovey dovey feel, but had every damn feel. This book was intense but also soothing.

The storyline was really good, the characters were all likable, and this book had everything….I mean everything. Unlike other romance writers out there, this author didn’t try to turn a romance novel into fucking erotica, things were subtle and not corny, in this case.

Okay I really want to talk about the characters, but I don’t want disclose anything(no spoilers), but I would say these characters were down to earth and very realistic. And if I talk about the story, I never read anything like this before. It was one of a kind.

Music in this book held a great position and I literally loved it…and let me tell you, there exist a whole album with beautiful soundtracks for this particular book, I mean that is crazy. And to this day I love all the songs and when I first heard them, I had this instant crush on this singer. I was like wow!

I can’t even express what all emotions I felt while reading this book, and yes I’m not doing the justice here while writing this review.

And here is the link to the soundtrack I was talking about, Maybe Someday Soundtracks by Griffin Peterson(well this is the guy I had instant crush on, God his voice is hot!)

So, if you really want to enjoy this book, go get the book, get the music and carry on (MUSIC + WRITING + STORYLINE = UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE !)

Also I would say there are some negative people out there, who will read this book from their perspective and will say what crazy shit is this? (well if you are one of them, I’m sorry for you, really!)

So people the thing is I really like this book and I want to force-feed this book on you.

And what this book is all about, this quote will sum it up for you.

“There are only twenty-six letters in the English alphabet. You would think there would only be so much you could do with twenty-six letters. You would think there were only so many ways those letters could make you feel when mixed up and shoved together to make words. However, there are infinite ways those twenty-six letters can make a person feel.”

Short Story : The Last Leaf by O. Henry

This story is really beautiful and one of my favorite short story written by this author.

“The Last Leaf”, this story symbolize a lot of different aspects of life:hope, friendship, sacrifice , pessimism, optimism and death.

There were four characters, Johnsy, Sue, doctor, and old Behrman.

Johnsy was a pessimist, while Sue was an optimist. Old Behrman here in this story was a friend , who sacrificed. All three of them were artists.

Old Behrman had never painted a masterpiece, but he said that, one day he’ll paint a wonderful picture, a masterpiece.

And he did, he painted the last leaf on the vine, before he died, and saved a life of an ill friend, Johny, who binds herself with a fancy that she’ll die with the fall of last ivy leaf.

According to me in this particular story the leaf symbolize life, death and hope. The life of a tree can be guessed by looking at its leaves, also the last leaf in this story signifies hope of life for tree and as it falls it conveys death.

I love the twist and ironic circumstances in O. Henry’s stories and this short story was worth reading.

You can also read the story here, The Last Leaf by O. Henry

You can also watch this short film.

Book Review : The Rosie Project(Don Tillman #1) by Graeme Simsion

“If you really love someone, Claudia continued, you have to be prepared to accept them as they are. Maybe you hope that one day they get a wake-up call and make the changes for their own reasons.”

My Rating :*4 Stars*

This book was a fun read, I loved it.

This book says “Nerds need love too”, and for me this was an addictive read, I read it in just one sitting. And to tell you I just like nerds and a story that have this combination of a nerd and romance, how can I miss it.No way!

This book comes under the genre of romance, so romance haters I want to tell you this is no traditional romance, and I guess if you’ll read it, you’ll love it. This is actually Sheldon Cooper romance(if you can understand what I mean!). But this book is also perfect for romance lovers. I liked the romance aspect of this book.

Don Tillman, the protagonist, I loved him. He is an Associate Professor of genetics at the university of Melbourne. He lives a life of measured value, with few friends and his perspective is fresh and logical. Here in this book he is trying to find a wife, to do that he basically design a questioner and call it “The Wife Project”.

Then he meets a girl, Rosie, and she doesn’t clear the criteria of being his wife, since Don have very high standards and normal people can’t just qualify them. But in this book you’ll see how Don actually fall for her even after having so many differences.

This book actually show us how a person who lives a rigid life can just change and accommodate himself according to someone he love.

“Love is a powerful feeling for another person, often defying logic.”

I found Don to be a really cute character, he made me laugh. Well this book made me laugh and I would say this book is a fun and quirky love story, with some really intelligent and interesting people.
