Book Review : Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman

“A person who cannot imagine the future is a person who cannot contemplate the result of his action. Some are thus paralyzed into inaction.”

and

“In a world without future, each moment is the end.”

This was a brilliant book and without doubt I want to recommend this book to every one. This was a very delightful read and took only three hours to read it. It was fun, fast and a thought provoking read.

Time is the soul of this book and basically this book is a collection of Einstein’s dreams(fictional dreams) which he saw when he was working on the Theory of Relativity(or say when he was struggling with the idea of relativity).

I liked the way these dreams were presented and I liked the poetry, the words were really flowing.

I don’t call this a novel and actually this book is a collection of about 30 vignettes and these vignettes are entirely based on different realities of time.

Now I have few questions for you :

How do you see time? And what do you see, when you picture time?

What if, you stuck in time?

ora_md

What if, time is a circle?

What if, time has three dimension, like space?

“In this world, time has three dimension, like space. Just as an object may move in three perpendicular directions, corresponding to horizontal, vertical and longitudinal, so an object may participate in three perpendicular futures. Each future moves in different direction of time. Each future is real. At every point of decision, the world split into three worlds, each with the same people, but different fates for those people. In time, there are an infinity of worlds.”

If you know the answers of these questions then good, but if not then go read this book and face the different realities of time and answer these questions for yourself 😉

You’ll be amazed!

Happy Reading!

Book Review : I Heart Series by Lindsey Kelk

“Life is too short to be miserable.”

My Rating : *4 Stars*

I followed these hearties for 3 years, I mean I read the first book when I was 15 year old and the last time I read one of these I was 17(I heart Vegas, the last installment that I read).

Okay so a secret, I call these books my guilty pleasure, when ever in my teenage years I needed a enjoyable escapist reading these books helped me. And this series did start with a bang!(I mean it!).

You know what I liked about these book that they kept me hooked up with the story, I had this soft spot for Angela and why I continued reading them because maybe I wanted completeness and the 4th installment provided me with that, so that was my last read because I was satisfied and also I think by that time I was over this genre(that people call Chick Lit, and I totally hate this word, totally!),I just can’t read them now.

Now let me talk about these book, well I call them cute because they are! after you read them you feel all cozy and fuzzy inside.

I want to say Lindsey Kelk, I love you for these hearties at least at some point of time I loved them.

These books are full of emotions, crazy stuff, people who make mistakes(they felt real to me), expensive stuff(which I can’t buy), hotness, some of my dream destinations(Well to tell you the truth I’m not into Chick-Lit but New York, Hollywood, Paris and Vegas made me want to read these books :P), and liters of alcohol(I don’t drink).

WP_20141209_015

I really love Paris to actually have this on my wall.(no I’ve never been there)

Alex, Angela’s boyfriend, for me was adorable and friendship between Jenny and Angela was remarkable.

Also these books are well written, I really liked the writing style and the stories are not at all predictable(well I Heart Vegas was kinda predictable). And I loved those cute book covers.

These books are relatable as they made me think about all the amazing friends I have in my life(they are few, but all of them are amazing and fabulous).

So these books are lighthearted, uplifting(don’t take it seriously) and I loved them all till I heart Vegas and  I’m not gonna read I heart London (if Angela can’t stand her parents for 10 minutes, how am I suppose to stand them for an entire novel) and I heart Christmas.(I think I’m just getting old :/)

Happy Reading!

Book Review : The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh

“This is my gift to you, this story that is also a song…”

My Rating : *4 Stars*

Amitav Ghosh, I must say is an amazing story teller and in this book he proved beyond doubt that literary skill of the Bengali is redoubtable!

Absolutely engrossing, this book is one such where you come across a great story which is amazingly written and make you an instant fan of the author.

This book is well researched and the story is set in the 70’s, and it revolves around the Sundarbans and have this lovely descriptions of the land, the people and the animals(I would actually call it informative!)

Why 4 stars to this book, even though it is such an amazing book? Yes, because at times the writer seems to me a bit too cynical and calculative.

And I’m bit ashamed of myself that I read just one book by this finest Indian writer. However, I’m planning to read his other books soon! and I grant his books a permanent position in my reading list(until they disappoint me).

Book Review : The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

“But man is not made for defeat,” he said. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”

 My Rating : *4 Stars*

You see our mind works in weird ways, ya. Like to our mind higher price tag defines the higher quality of the product(don’t say No! you know it does), likewise if I talk about this book, Ernest Hemingway won the Pulitzer Prize for “The Old Man and the Sea”, Good!

Now you might be thinking why was I talking about mind, so the thing is when you get to know people are getting prize for certain books, then there must be some complex and deep thoughts associated with that book. However, this book is literally very simplistic(talk about simplicity!) and literally it is just about an old man, sea, fish and a boat. That is it. And really if you try to make this complex (like I was trying to make, this book gonna suck!).

As Hemingway said : “There isn’t any symbolism, the sea is a sea, the old man is an old man, the boy is a boy and the fish is a fish. The sharks are all sharks no better and no worse. All the symbolism that people say is shit. What goes beyond is what you see beyond when you know.”

This book basically made me feel sad for the old man, for he was not sad for himself. The ending was not all happy. Sometimes you just go too far, you give up and that is when you get destroyed and once you are destroyed you are defeated.

It is a story of struggle, ambition and survival.

“It’s silly not to hope. It’s a sin he thought.”

And to tell you the truth when I gave this book the very first read, it bored me to death!

For people who think watching is way better then reading, here is a treat for you as well, watch it! it’s perfection!

Book Review : The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

“You give but little when you give of your possessions.

It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”

My Rating : *4 Stars*

The talks of the prophet and things that affect our everyday life are very touching and deeply philosophical. The writing is simply awesome. ‘The Prophet’ is one of those very few books that have pearls of wisdom on every page.

The chapter I liked the most is “On Children”

picture (2)

Your Children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

***

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls.

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

As I said I liked this chapter. However, when I read this to my mother.

she said:

Well I guess then you should just get out of my house as well! (with a smirk ;))

The other thing is even though this book is written very beautifully and contain a lot of wisdom, it just contradict itself and sometimes I couldn’t agree with the writer(I guess because of different perspectives).

But yes I enjoyed it for the lyrical prose and for this man talking of all the elements of life.

“Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.

But you are eternity and you are the mirror.”

” Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and other say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.”

But I say unto you, they are inseparable.

Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed. “

Book Review : Thoughtless ( Thoughtless #1) by S.C. Stephens

“You wreck me.”

Synopsis:

For almost two years now, Kiera’s boyfriend, Denny, has been everything she’s ever wanted: loving, tender and endlessly devoted to her. When they head off to a new city to start their lives together, Denny at his dream job and Kiera at a top-notch university, everything seems perfect. Then an unforeseen obligation forces the happy couple apart.

Feeling lonely, confused, and in need of comfort, Kiera turns to an unexpected source—a local rock star named Kellan Kyle. At first, he’s purely a friend that she can lean on, but as her loneliness grows, so does their relationship. And then one night everything changes… and none of them will ever be the same.

Review :

I don’t even know what I want to say, I really don’t. Okay let me start my ranting!

Plot :

If I tell you what is the second most shittiest thing about this book, I would say The Plot.

Okay sometimes you come across a book, you start reading it and after a while you get to know that it actually is a part of a series, meh… So yes I first read the second book, that is Effortless.(turned out it was not this shitty, and I wanted know what exactly happened before…so that led me to the first book, that is Thoughtless.)

So now I’m here reading Thoughtless, I’m very curious to know what actually happened in the first book.

Turned out LOVE TRIANGLE happened :/ ( Why? oh, why?)

Now that is also not the worst thing that happened in the book…the protagonist  turned out to be a total idiot, like if I meet her in real life, I would just smack her face hard on the wall(let us talk about her later).

But still I read the whole book(whole book I’m talking about, let me tell you I read the whole series :P) because the author hold my attention with all the drama and emotion, but dear lord! this book was a roller coaster ride, indeed it was.

Characters :

There are three main characters, Kellan, Kiera and Danny. Kiera, the protagonist, is actually in relationship with Denny. Kellan is Denny’s best friend.

Kellan Kyle

d504592ed570e616373984b39d5595c7

I really want to ask S.C. Stephens, that what were you trying to do while you wrote this character. What do you want? Do you want us to die in shame? or maybe you want us to have an expectation that a guy like this exist? BTW who were you thinking about while writing this character, I want to know madam.

tim-gunn-im-concerned

I fell in love with this guy instantly, I was like wow…but I’m really angry with him as well. And also I feel sorry for him. He is not perfect, but he’s perfect. He’s lead singer of a band called ” D-Bags”(Really, I hate the name).

Denny

pick for Denny

He is the best character in the whole book, although the storyline broke my heart at times for Denny 😦

Kiera

c4212c78c71e2862b8090518acdc4663

Well she is the worst person in the book.

Kiera is a self centered, stubborn, clueless, immature and a selfish woman.

She was constantly cheating and cheating and cheating on her boyfriend through out the book…and was constantly feeling guilty for what she was doing.

It was like I’m cheating and I’m guilty, but again I’m cheating and I’m guilty…But I’ll still cheat( Who the fuck does that?) I literally started hating the word guilty after reading this book.

And then for some reason she thought that she is innocent :/

Kellan: We were never innocent, Kiera. How naive are you?

I hated her, and now I’m tired of thinking about her. And most of the people in this book were stupid, total stupid!

492012211119fsgdf

And then there are other characters, band members, their girlfriends( they are just normal), then there are these weird people who work at Petes (it is a bar where D-Bags play their music)

3f0f44e1d218ad8815cc1d3f87df7799

So well now I want to forcefully end this review, like the author did with the book. Nothing much to say, but I still want to say something that don’t read this book.(If you are not already in the trap ;))

And if people call this romance, I hate romance!

Review:

You know when you read this book, you actually start caring about the characters. Like for some reason(I’m not telling what reason it is because it’s a spoiler :P) I really care about Marvis. The characters have this potential to emerge out as real people, the story is uplifting. And it is good to follow Marvis journey to find freedom and fame.

“Song Bird” is beautifully written and is an engrossing and enjoyable read. And when I read this book it somehow made me feel good about life, Life Song did it too.

What more this book taught, that while your past shape you up, but it doesn’t actually define who you are, and that it is your present that actually defines you!(You come across a situation and then you show the world who you really are)

In the end, I would say, this book is a good read.

Then why 4 stars? because Life Song for me was 5 Stars 😉
